Using Capable 21C Remotely
Abstract
It is possible to configure PC's so that they can be used and
accessed remotely. This allows the operation of Capable
21C from a home PC, or any other location. This
knowledgebase article describes how to setup this kind of
functionality.
Underlying challenge
Note that remote operation of a PC is a standard feature of
Microsoft Windows (tm). The steps described in this article
relate to the setup and configuration of Microsoft Windows, and
have nothing to do with the configuration of Capable 21C.
The steps described below are of a slightly technical nature,
and a local PC technician should be consulted to ensure that the
office's security is not compromised, and also to assist if the
steps described below become too complex.
Resolution
Accessing a computer remotely involves work on both
computers. Firstly, the computer that is located in the
office that will be controlled must be configured appropriately.
Secondly, the computer that will be used to do the controlling
will have software that must be started correctly.
Detailed Information
Note that there are significant security implications in
allowing remote access to occur. Whilst it is convenient
to be able to access Capable 21C (and other programs) remotely,
there is an element of risk that someone else will attempt to do
the same thing - which would compromise the office data, and
patient/client privacy. Offices should consult with their
local PC Technician before proceeding.
To configure the PC that will be controlled:
- Ensure that Remote Administration is allowed. This
is accessible via the My Computer Properties window.
- Ensure that the office firewall or modem/router forwards
all traffic on port 3389 to the PC that will be controlled.
To use the remote administration software on the remote PC:
- Start the remote administration software. This is
located under Start|Programs|Accessories|Communication
Tools.
- Key the IP address of the office firewall/modem/router.
Press ENTER.
- Key the appropriate username and password when
requested.
